The Grand Solutions program invests in ambitious projects that create new, concrete solutions for society challenges and provide value for Denmark.

ECCO, DTU, BioScavenge have in collaboration with Innvite successfully gained a grant (12 MILL) from the Innovation Fund Denmark. This grant supports the acceleration of the GreenTan-project towards recovery and reuse of water and energy. With this initiative and contribution, it´s possible to create less environmental footprint, harvest energy, increase profitability, move towards a more sustainable production in the leather industry and thereby achieve a greener future.

The leather industry calls for sustainable solutions and aim to develop and implement technologies to reach greener production processes; A change that benefits on a global scale.

With the GreenTan-project ECCO, Technical University of Denmark, Bioscavenge are taking important actions to meet industry demands and environmental challenges.

ECCO, DTU and BioScavenge have joined forces to tackle one of the most prominent challenges in the tanning industry. The GreenTan-project aims at recovery and reuse of water and energy in one of ECCO’s tanneries in the Netherlands, and thereby decreasing its environmental footprint and increasing its profitability.

Key activities will include comprehensive monitoring, technology development, digital twin modelling, impact and feasibility assessment and technology implementation. Based on the preliminary assessment, it is expected that 95% of water would be reused and more than 3 times energy would be harvested in the tannery. The current project would enable ECCO to take leather production to the next level of sustainable production and make ECCO a role model for the leather industry.

BioScavenge as technology provider together with DTU will develop and test the solution at ECCO’s tannery in Dongen. This will create a unique business opportunity for BioScavenge to become a preferred sustainability partner of tanneries globally, creating a huge potential Danish export adventure of green tech solutions. The potential will be even further increased as solution is transferred to the textile manufacturers.
